Propane Safety Tips

Don't enter an area where you suspect a gas leak. If you are in such an area, leave immediately and call your propane gas dealer.

Be alert for propane odor when working in areas where propane is used. Even a faint odor may indicate a hazardous situation.

Always look and smell for propane leaks before attempting to light appliances. Sniff around the floor area. Propane is heavier than air and may collect in low areas. If you smell propane, do not light the appliance. Call your propane dealer.

Avoid direct contact with propane. Sever freeze burns or frostbite can occur.

Improperly vented or defective appliances can cause potentially fatal carbon monoxide poisoning. Have your propane system and appliances inspected periodically by your propane dealer.

Flooding can damage gas equipment. Appliances, control valves and regulators can be ruined by immersion in water. If any part of you gas system has been submerged, it must be inspected by a trained propane service man.

Know how to shut off your gas in case of an emergency. Each and every propane tank is equipped with a valve that turns the gas on or off. You need to know where this valve is located and which direction to turn it. If you don't, call your propane dealer and ask them.
